The alpine high country consists of high mountains, snow-capped in winter and deep valleys holding sparkling rivers, lakes and streams that are home to wild trout, also platypuses and other native animals.
The Kiewa Valley
Kiewa, pronounced ‘key-wah’, is an aboriginal word meaning sweet water. The Kiewa Valley is a dairy and beef cattle area through which flows the Kiewa River, providing excellent trout fishing and safe swimming for kids, inner tube floating and canoeing as it flows through the townships of Mt Beauty and Tawonga, enroute to the Murray River at Albury.
Mount Beauty Township
With a population of 2500 people, Mt Beauty is located 7 kilometres from Tawonga (pop. 350) and is the largest town in the Kiewa Valley. It offers excellent shopping and service facilities and boasts six doctors, five churches, three hotels, two banks, one radio station, a modern hospital and an airport.
Friendly Locals
Mt Beauty restaurants, bakery and hotels offer excellent cuisine and local wines and there are several caravan parks and motels available. Locals are mostly friendly and love to chat, even with strangers, so expect to be noticed and appreciated when in town.
